Xiaomi announces the Mi 5c with its first in-house chipset, the Surge S1
Xiaomi has been working on its own mobile chipset for just over two years, but that wait is finally over.
Xiaomi today announced the Mi 5c, which features the Surge S1 chipset under the hood. This is the company's first in-house system-on-a-chip, and, of the many benefits Xiaomi expects, one of those is being able to send out updates for the Mi 5c much faster than previous devices.
The Surge S1 is an octa-core processor, featuring four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. It also boasts a 32-bit high-performance DSP for better noise cancellation and voice processing. Xiaomi also says that its Surge S1 processor is 2 times faster than the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625.
As for the Mi 5c itself, it's a mid-range handset with a 5.15-inch full HD display, the Surge S1 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 64GB of built-in storage. The battery is measured in at 2860mAh, and around back there's a 12-megapixel camera. Xiaomi also notes the Mi 5c will be updated to Android 7.1 Nougat sometime in March.
