When it comes to merger rumors, one of the hallmark cases goes to Sprint and T-Mobile, which has been put on the table more than a few times over the years. Now, Reuters reports that SoftBank, the company that owns 83 percent of Sprint, is preparing to start negotiations with Deutsche Telekom, all in hopes of merging Sprint and T-Mobile. According to the information, SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son is frustrated with the lack of growth from Sprint would cede control of Sprint over to Deutsche Telekom in order to get a T-Mobile deal done. This would effectively merge Sprint and T-Mobile, but what the outcome of that is remains unknown. Sprint actually abandoned plans to merge with T-Mobile once before because the FCC was expected to make the deal difficult, if at all possible. T-Mobile CEO John Legere actually said as recently as this year's CES that a merger with Sprint is one "potential outcome," so it appears that the possibility of a merger is here.
