For a long time Android tablet users were left on the sidelines hoping to have as many options for creating whiteboard-style flipped video lessons as their iPad-using counterparts had. Fortunately, over the last couple of years some solid Android apps have appeared in the whiteboard video market. The following three Android apps are all good options for creating whiteboard-style videos on Android tablets. If you have a Chromebook that supports the use of Android apps, these apps will work on your Chromebook as well as your Android tablet.
Know Recorder is a free Android app for creating whiteboard-style instructional videos. I recently featured this app on Free Technology for Teachers. With Know Recorder installed on your Android tablet you can draw and talk while the app records everything that you do and say. Your video can have multiple pages which is a nice feature when you want to give a multiple step demonstration without having to erase anything. Know Recorder will let you import PDFs and pictures to display and annotate on screen in your instructional video. Completed videos can be saved to your device's camera roll, exported to YouTube, or shared to Know Lounge. Know Lounge is the community site for sharing lessons created with Know Recorder.
Explain Everything for Android allows you to create explanatory videos with drawings, text, pictures, PDFs, and your voice. On Explain Everything you can draw on a white canvas while talking to explain how to solve a math problem. You can also upload a picture and talk about it. Have a document that you want explain? You can upload it as a PDF and highlight parts of it while talking about it. Explain Everything videos are created screen-by-screen. When you've finished talking about one screen, create a new one to add to your video. You can play back each screen individually before previewing the entire production. Your completed video can be exported to YouTube or to your tablet's camera roll.
The simplest app on this list is Clarisketch. Clarisketch is a free Android app that has great potential for classroom use. The app allows you to take a picture or pull one from your device's camera roll and then add your voice to it. While you are talking about your picture you can draw on it to highlight sections of it. Completed projects are shared as links to the video file hosted on Clarisketch. You can share the link to your Clarisketch video and have it play on nearly any device that has a web browser.
