Google Assistant may be coming to Nexus 5X and 6P with major update

Google Assistant is currently exclusive to the Google Pixel and Pixel XL, at least for now. Thankfully, it seems that the software feature will be coming to Google's old, forgotten Nexus devices. Whether this will be the 7.1.2 update or a bigger update like 7.2 is not known, but hopefully it will be soon.
